Il Mediant 1000B è uno chassis VoIP Gateway modulare per interfacciare telefoni tradizionali o centralini PBX alla rete IP oppure i centralini IP-PBX alla rete PSTN. Inoltre per operare come un media gateway puro Mediant 1000 può supportare applicazioni che gli consentono di agire come piattaforma IP-PBX. L'apparato agisce come punto di demarcazione tra la rete VoIP dell'azienda e il service provider SIP: esso infatti mette a disposizione una serie di servizi fondamentali come la sicurezza (protezione DoS, firewalling, criptazione ed autenticazione), l'interoperabilità e QoE (Quality of Experience). Questo apparato viene fornito con la licenza software per 25 sessioni SBC (upgradabili in un secondo momento fino a 150). Mediant 1000 oltre ad essere pienamente interoperabile con tutti i softswitches , gatekeeper, proxy servers e IP phones, è estremamente scalabile, supporta infatti 1,2 o 4 flussi E1/T1/J1, da 4 a 20 porte BRI o da 1 a 24 porte analogiche in varie configurazioni FXO/FXS , sostenendo una architettura modulare "pay-as-you-grow" . Il Mediant 1000 ha migliorato le caratteristiche hardware e software per facilitare l'istallazione e per garantire l'alta la qualità della voce e il mantenimento della comunicazione anche in caso di guasto alla rete per mezzo di un lifeline di fallback verso la rete PSTN.
